The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) has suffered another server loss involving customer data in barely two months.
A computer server containing transaction data of about 159,000 customer accounts was discovered to be missing from HSBC's Kwun Tong branch in Hong Kong on Apr. 26, the bank disclosed Wednesday in a company statement. The branch was undergoing renovation at that time.
According to the bank, the lost server had contained information that included customer names, account numbers as well as transaction types and amounts. Customer PINs (personal identification numbers), user IDs and passwords were not captured on the server, HSBC added.
The bank said the risk of data leakage and fraudulent transactions was low because the missing server was protected by multiple levels of security. HSBC also said it has since put in place preventive measures to avoid a similar occurrence.
This is the second incident where the bank reported losing customer data in as many months.
Last month, ZDNet Asia's sister site Silicon.com reported that HSBC faced possible investigation by the U.K. Financial Services Authority after losing a CD containing the names, dates of birth and insurance cover levels of clients with life assurance.
