PHILIPPINES--Microsoft has appointed a new managing director to lead its Philippine operations.

In a statement released today, the software giant said Rafael Rollan will take over as the new managing director of its local office, replacing Antonio "T.J." Javier Jr., who served as Microsoft Philippines' top chief for the last five years.

The company did not give reasons for Javier's sudden resignation, noting only that he will remain in his post until the end of September.

Chris Atkinson, Microsoft's president for Southeast Asia, said in a statement that the software vendor "will welcome [Javier] back to the company anytime".

"TJ has been instrumental in growing our Microsoft business in the Philippines, and is leaving us with the business in good shape and on good terms. I wish him all the best," Atkinson added.

Upon assuming his new role officially on Oct. 1, Rollan said one of his mandates--apart from growing Microsoft's Philippine business--will be "to help build the country's IT infrastructure and work to empower the underserved sectors".

Prior to his new appointment, Rollan had led Microsoft's enterprise business unit.
