Microsoft told Nigeria to dump Linux for Windows

Nigerian schools bought thousands of PCs with Mandriva Linux pre-installed but after words from Microsoft, they switched to Windows.

The chief executive officer of Mandriva, François Bancilhon, has taken Microsoft to task over the Nigerian government's alleged decision to wipe Mandriva Linux software from 17,000 school computers and install Windows instead.

In an open letter, Bancilhon claimed Mandriva developed and recently closed a deal to provide computers to Nigeria's schools. The initial batch delivered was 17,000 Classmate PCs from Intel, with a customized Mandriva Linux operating system, according to Bancilhon.

However, Mandriva claims it has now been told that the Nigerian government will replace its Linux distribution with Windows.

"Today, we heard from the customer: 'We shall pay for the Mandriva software as agreed, but we shall replace it [with] Windows afterward[s]'," wrote Bancilhon. "Wow! I'm impressed, Steve! What have you done for these guys to change their mind like this? Hey Steve, how do you feel looking at yourself in the mirror in the morning?"

Microsoft and representatives from the Nigerian government had not responded to a request for comment at the time of writing.

I don't know why the Nigerian governments should carelessly went for LINUS in the first place. Many of them in government are university graduates and engineers. With their constant travels outside the country, they should have known that MICROSOFT is the KING and shall remain so in the world of OPERATING SYSTEMS.
What am I to do with LINUS? Since I opened my computer store in USA, I am yet to find a customer with LINUS in his computer.
Nigerians, if you want to be competitive or even do better in IT industries, you hae to go for WINDOWS!

you mean linux? and i live in the us and use it as my primary os. The reason you haven't seen a customer with it is a)it does not mess up like windows, and b)most linux users are not idiots and know how to fix their own stuff.

The "compelling business argument for Windows" has a three-pointed star on the front and is currently whisking the minister responsible around Lagos in air-conditioned, leather-unholstered luxury.....

I just have one thing to say to this......
MS needs to be put out of business!

Here come the MCSE trolls, scared for their jobs. And Microsoft is deathly afraid of seeing any precedent set, so they'll spend whatever they have to, bribe whomever they have to, to try to prevent it.

If you want monthly reinstalls, worms, viruses, Trojans, bot-nets, etc., then use Windows. If you actually want to use your computer for its intended purpose, use Linux or BSD.

It was just an easy task for Ballmer to corrupt one of the most corrupted countries.

By the way Mr Philipe Omotunde, it is LINUX not LINUS.

By the way Mr Andres Gonzales Cantu, he is Philip Omotunde and not Philipe

Mr. Philemon Phil, you are wright. But my error was a very little _lapsus calami_, Philip and Philipe are variants of the same greek name. Linus is a latin name and Linux is a neologism. Thanks anyway.

Mr. Philemon Phil, before you correct me again: s/wright/right/g.

MicroSoft got stung:
Nigerians are not that stupid. The guys who are corrupt know how to play the game. Setup linux and then make MicroSoft pay up. Simple.

RE: MicroSoft got stung:
with all due respect {that is if you deserve any} Nigerians aren't stupid at all, at least they are smarter than people from your country {put that at the back of your mind}, mind you they don't have to be bribed by anybody to switch to windows. Just been realistic, I am an avid linux user, my very high spec hp laptop runs UBUNTU linux but I also like to be frank based on research, people generally dont like change especially when the old system is still manageable. Mandriva probably didn't cut it with the potential users, and people have other things to learn besides a new OS. that said, I don't know what kind of IT specialist Mr Phillip is, but he definitely ain't speaking for Nigerians in general. Some of us are tight on linux, and we are still developing, if only companies like redhat would come to Nigeria. MANDRIVA didn't do it well, I have some major inputs/advice for them though if they are interested.

Wow Philip . . . What a sheep you are

It's just so easy for the world to call Nigerians corrupt. If a fool, M$ in this case is willing to pay for what people copy and distribute, take the money and those PCs will still end up with Linux eventually. A good way to get back Nigeria's stolen wealth.

Mr. Omotunde, where is your computer store, if you don't mind me asking?
Posted by anonymous on Monday, December 17 2007 12:12 PM

Well, AndrĂ©s GonzĂĄlez CantĂș, I don't know what kind of reply to "Philemon Phil" that was, but it definitely didn't make any sense. Let's please stick with English.

Anyway, I agree with Mr. Omotunde. I feel like they knew better since Microsoft is the monopoly of other systems (CLEARLY) and will remain so for obvious reasons.
