Beijing: Red Hat opens two facilities

Red Hat has launched a testing and certification facility in Beijing, China, as well as opened another research and development (R&D) center in the Chinese state.

These moves come under an initiative to encourage deployment of open source software in the country, which Red Hat has termed Open Source Collaborative Innovation (OSCI).

Under the initiative, newly-appointed president and CEO, Jim Whitehurst, conferred Red Hat's certification on 30 regionally-based independent software vendors (ISVs) of the open source vendor's product offerings.

The testing facility, called the Red Hat ISV Solution Center, will serve the main function of testing and certifying enterprise applications developed using Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and JBoss middleware.

"Red Hat's collaboration with ISVs is the centerpiece of the company's strategy to accelerate the deployment of enterprise-class, open source solutions in China," said Red Hat in a statement.

Additionally, the newly-opened R&D lab will add to the company's other five global R&D facilities, and will support Red Hat's software offerings and certify hardware for the company's products.

Whitehurst said in a company statement that these moves are the latest "in what will be a series of initiatives" the company plans to launch in the country.

These announcements follow a recent campaign that Red Hat kicked off in Beijing, to encourage use of virtualization through training courses.
