One million customers have signed up to Microsoft's Office Live Workspace online collaboration tool, six months after its beta launch.

Workspace is the Web-based extension of Microsoft Office, allowing users to access and share documents online.

The free tool lets users store, work on and collaborate to 1,000 Office documents online and securely access them through a Web browser.

The offering is part of Microsoft's efforts to bolster its presence in cloud computing and software as a service.

In comparison, Google's online collaboration technology, Google Apps, has secured 10 million active users two years after its release.

According to Google, around 500,000 businesses have signed up with 3,000 new businesses joining per day.

Microsoft has added 11 new languages--including Japanese and traditional Chinese--to Workspace along with 20 new features such as multi-file upload, activity panels and improved support for Firefox.

Tim Ferguson of Silicon.com reported from London.

Push and pull going on ..
Msoft is under countervailing forces, where one hand says join the online bandwagon, other says "hold on, we are a desktop office making company we can't kill our own revenue stream and cannibalize our product!!".. So we have a half hearted attempt of an online office space. The interface is good however requirement of original office software to edit the file is a big dampener. However its a significant step from the largest software making company and should see more action in this space. Stay on !!
