10 tech disappointments with cool names

Friday, July 27 2007 10:51 am

Some tech companies occasionally invest more brainpower in naming their products than in making them successful.

Back in 2000, electronics manufacturer 3Com released a device that was supposed to make the Internet a whole lot friendlier: Audrey. The PC-less Web-browsing appliance, which had an 8-inch screen, came in shades like "linen," "meadow," "ocean," "slate," and "sunshine." It offered television-like "channels" with news and weather.

Cute, yes, and the name couldn't come with more obvious connotations of style and classiness. Unfortunately, Audrey was a sales disaster, and not only did 3Com stop selling the device within months, it also offered full refunds. Ouch.
