REDWOOD CITY, California--The results of a poll conducted for the Blue Mountain.com unit of ExiteAtHome and released Friday show that 33 percent of Valentine's Day gift-givers will send their romantic messages online.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, indicated that more than 20 million surfers will send their greeting via Blue Mountain.com, a figure the company said reflects an increase of 2 million over last year. The study pegged Blue Mountain's share of the online Valentine market at 68 percent.

Blue Mountain vice president and general manager Mark Rinella attributed the growth in popularity of online greeting cards to the fact that senders can attach a variety of personal touches such as voice, video and photo greetings, as well as gifts, according to a company statement.

The poll found that nearly one half (48 percent) of men surveyed, who plan to celebrate Valentine's Day, intend to give flowers to women, and nearly one quarter (22 percent) of their female counterparts plan to give chocolates or candy to men.

The survey also estimates that 80 percent of this year's gift-givers will spend less than US$100 on a Valentine's Day gift. Women plan to buy their gifts earlier than men, with 40 percent shopping for presents more than a week in advance, compared to 21 percent of men, 52 percent of whom plan to buy their offerings within the last three days before Valentine's.

Harris Interactive said it used its online panel of more than 7 million cooperative respondents to conduct the survey. The data was gathered through two separate online interviews, with a total of 5,012 respondents, between January 23 and February 2, the companies said.
