Cisco Systems

Like many technology companies around the world, eating your own dog food is a surefire way to earn brownie points with customers.

Last year, the networking giant introduced a mobile computing initiative aimed at providing its employees with secure Internet and corporate e-mail access on their mobile devices.

Today, Cisco has about 12,000 personal digital assistants (PDA) connected to its network.

To address potential security breaches with a large number of connected employees, the company introduced the Cisco Pocket Office, a program that enables employees to securely access the Cisco network from their PDAs, while maintaining the security and integrity of the network.

The product essentially provides intuitive interfaces that make setting up, attending, and managing meetings simple. Its voice, video and Web conferencing capabilities also provide a range of applications, from highly collaborative meetings to training sessions and presentations.

Cisco has been adamant on a totally connected office environment. Its extensive corporate network provides both wireless and wired connections for ubiquitous network access.

The networking company estimates that by providing instant network connectivity to its workforce, it has reaped productivity improvements of between US$9 million to US$18 million per year.

On a micro level, Cisco staff have reported that they gained an additional three hours of productivity per week, while road warriors are seeing between five and six hours per week in added productivity.
