Sony Corporation has denied claims in a report stating its consumer business chief, Kazuo Hirai, will be its new president in April this year, replacing Howard Stringer who currently holds the position.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported on Friday that the electronics giant was planning to promote Hirai to president as early as April, while Stringer would still retain the roles of chairman and CEO. The report was picked up by various media outlets worldwide.

However, Sony issued a press statement on Saturday, saying: "Sony Corporation has made no announcement in this regard and nothing has been determined at this time."

Widely expected to be next CEO of Sony, Hirai was promoted last March to assume the role as head of consumer products and services which make up the bulk of Sony's sales. The Japanese giant faces increasing competition from rival smartphone and tablet makers, as well as the need to mend its reputation after a series of security breaches to its PlayStation Network (PSN) and other sites.
