Acer TravelMate Timeline 8371
Reviews The TravelMate 8371 is solidly built, although the degree of flex in the keyboard may annoy some users. If you need an integrated optical drive, look to one of the larger models. Otherwise, enjoy the excellent battery life.

Sony Vaio VGN-TT11WN/B
Reviews This is an attractive ultraportable with a high-quality screen, a good keyboard and integrated mobile broadband. But for the (high) asking price we'd expect a larger hard drive, a better webcam, more USB ports and better graphics performance.

Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile U9210
Reviews Fujitsu Siemens' Esprimo Mobile U9210 is a solidly built, if chunky, ultraportable that should cope well with life on the road. Battery life could be better, though, and we'd prefer a bigger screen and more USB ports.

Panasonic Toughbook Executive CF-T8
Reviews This 12.1in. ultraportable updates the CF-T7, but some key features are still missing, notably a wide aspect ratio screen, an optical drive and a webcam. If you need ruggedness and a touch-screen, then it's a reasonable choice. Otherwise, it's a little short on features.

Lenovo ThinkPad T400
Reviews The ThinkPad T400 is a solidly built and reasonably configurable business notebook that performs well. We like the integrated mobile broadband, but it's a shame that a webcam and Bluetooth aren't standard on all models.

Fujitsu Siemens LifeBook S6420
Reviews The LifeBook S6420 combines portability, 3G support and an integrated webcam, and supports an optional second battery in the optical drive bay. Although we have a few gripes, it's a good choice for the mobile professional.

Apple MacBook Air (1.8GHz)
Reviews The design is revolutionary, but Apple's MacBook Air will appeal to a smaller, more specialised audience than the standard MacBook, thanks to a stripped-down set of connections and features.

Reviews Beautifully designed and reassuringly robust, the 1.5kg Vaio Z11 marries a decent-sized 13.1in. screen with good portability and integrated 3G/HSDPA. It's not flawless, but if you can afford it, buy it.

GETAC B300
Reviews Like many seriously rugged notebooks, the B300 is an expensive piece of kit. We particularly like the 'sunlight readable' screen option and touch-screen capability, although its 4:3 aspect ratio makes this 13.3in. notebook seem a little dated.
