TAIPEI--Taiwan and the world's largest semiconductor foundry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, reported increased sales and profits in its third quarter on Thursday.

Taiwan Semi's net sales grew 141 percent to NT$47.49 billion (US$1.47 billion) when compared to the third quarter in 1999. Net income grew 227 percent to NT$20.06 billion (US$620.99 million) in the same quarter.

The sales boost was mainly due to the company's takeovers of TSMC-Acer and Worldwide Semiconductor, although higher unit sales and higher prices also moved sales upward.

Compared to the previous quarter, net sales rose 49.3 percent and net income increased 50.3 percent.

Taiwan Semi operates eight semiconductor fabrication facilities and is constructing two new 300mm fabs. The company said it expects capacity to reach nearly 3.4 million 8-inch equivalent wafers this year, lifting to 4.79 million wafers in 2001.

Taiwan is rapidly emerging as one of the leading chipmaking nations, with consumption of semiconductor manufacturing equipment now greater than Japan's and rapidly catching up with North America.

Shipments of chip manufacturing equipment to Taiwan in the first half of 2000 rose to US$4.8 billion.

Taiwan's two biggest foundries are Taiwan Semi and United Microelectronics Corp. The Taiwan Industrial Research Technology Institute reports that the island is host to 20 wafer fabs, 127 integrated circuit (IC) design houses, about 75 IC assembly and test facilities, and more than 60 materials suppliers.
