Q. I am a mechanical engineer who has worked in an IT company for two years as a software tester.

I am planning to do a Masters in Mechanical Engineering course with specialization in Product Life-Cycle Management from the U.S. Michigan Technology University.

I would like to know about the career opportunities for mechanical engineers in this particular field.

Career advice from Tay Kok Choon, country manager of JobStreet Singapore:
Graduates in the field of Mechanical Engineering have multiple options in their career pursuit.

In Singapore, for example, mechanical engineering is one of the four pillars of the island-state's economy, alongside chemicals, electronics and life sciences.

We assume you have acquired the soft skills underlying all such career development. As such, let's focus on jobs closely related to your study:

1.Mechanical and electrical engineer.
You will lead in the planning, design and implementation of a wide range of mechanical and electrical (M&E) infrastructure and systems to enhance facilities. The nature of projects can be commercial or defense.
Jobs that we come across are areas such as high tension and low tension power generation and distribution systems, mechanization and automation systems, environmental control systems and protective systems including fire safety and security systems.
In addition, you can manage projects which are outsourced to external consultants and support various M&E facilities.
2.Project engineer (Systems engineering)
3.Decision support analyst (Systems engineering)
4.Operations analyst (Systems engineering)
5.Software engineer (Project management)
6.Software engineer (Development)
7.Project engineer
8.Industrial designer. Responsible for designing products that are distributed globally--usually consumer electronics, telecommunication or IT-related products.
9.Mechanical engineer (Construction)
