Q. I am an IT professional employed with one of India's top IT services companies.
I have a total of five years experience on Microsoft technologies--three years in VB6 and two years of VB.net plus DB2 (all Windows-based applications, without exposure to Web technologies).
I have onsite work experience for about 2.5 years, working for a major U.S. retailer through my current company (which is also my first employer).
I would like know if I switch to another company, what are the best options given the industry conditions and what type of salary package should I ask for.
Also, should I remain in the tech domain (that is, pursue a tech architect career) or do I get into the role of a project manager?
Career advice from E. Balaji, CEO of HR services provider, Ma Foi Management Consultants:
You have good work experience in terms of domain, technology and onsite exposure. If you enjoy working on technology and have a technical bent of mind, you should pursue a career of a technical architect.
Or else, you can get into project management with expertise on domains like investment banking, retail, et cetera.
With your experience, you can work with any of the large software companies.
Compensation could be in the range of 6 to 10 lakhs (US$14,100 to US$23,500) per annum.
