Q. I have been based out of India for the past seven years and have worked in IT organizations throughout.
My appointment in the last two years has been as a senior business analyst in the space of CRM with Siebel being the specific technology.
I have been trying direct applications for jobs in Singapore for a long time, since I see many openings directly matching my skills. However, it seems that since I am not stationed in Singapore, it leaves me with no chances.
How do I overcome this? I am sure if I get a chance to be interviewed, I will succeed.
But the question is how do I cross the first barrier of geographical distance?
Career advice from Norman Miranda, principal consultant at executive search company Resource Dynamics:
This is a challenging situation. Often organizations and recruiters prefer to hire locally as it is far less complicated with less barriers, both personal and bureaucratic, to overcome.
However, you do have an advantage if your skills are unique and if there is a shortage of such skills. You need to do some research to identify these and highlight it.
I would also encourage you to make good use of your network in Singapore. Source out friends, ex-colleagues, business contacts and so on, to link you up to the hiring organizations in Singapore.
If you are willing to invest some expense, then a trip to Singapore to meet recruiters would be very helpful. However, make sure you line up these appointments in advance, don't call at the last minute and expect them to see you. They need to see value first.
