MELBOURNE--Telstra Corp and Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd said they will rename their Internet Protocol Backbone Co joint venture Reach Ltd and appoint Alistair Grieve as its chief executive.

Grieve was formerly deputy chief executive of Cable & Wireless HKT Ltd. He quit Hong Kong's former monopoly phone operator before CyberWorks took it over last year.

Gerry Moriarty, Telstra's group managing director for infrastructure services & wholesale, will become Reach's chairman for two years, Telstra said in a statement.

Last month, CyberWorks, Richard Li's Internet and telephone services venture, won approval from shareholders to sell telecom assets and bonds to Telstra, Australia's No.1 phone company, raising US$3.35 billion it will use to repay debt due next month.

CyberWorks rose 1.1 percent to HK$4.675. Telstra fell 1.3 percent to A$6.88.

In a statement, both companies also said they will officially launch tomorrow Reach and their two other joint ventures; all three which were formalized last October.

The two ventures are Regional Wireless Company (RWC), which will operate across Asia Pacific starting with CyberWork's mobile unit CSL (previously Cable & Wireless HKT CSL); and Internet Data Center Company (IDC), which will establish data centers in the region.
