In just over a decade, Trend Micro has established itself as one of the key players in secure content management.

In January 2005, Chairman and founder Steve Chang passed the CEO reins to chief technology officer Eva Chen who had been the company's executive vice president from the company's founding in 1988. She was Trend Micro's chief technology officer before taking over the top executive position.

The Japan-based company made a couple of acquisitions over the year, beefing up its anti-spyware capabilities with the purchase of InterMute, and boosting its Internet security offerings through antispam company Kelkea. For the third consecutive year, Trend Micro was recently voted the top global brand in Taiwan in the government-sponsored awards.

In the process of expanding and differentiating itself from its competitors, Trend Micro has signaled its intention to woo the small and medium-sized businesses (SMB). It recently introduced a suite of products targeted at the SMB market in Canada and reported strong growth in the Middle East in the last two quarters.

In March 2005, Trend Micro entered into a partnership with SINA, one of China's top Internet portals, to provide protection to an estimated 100 million e-mail users.

Trend Micro also has a healthy relationship with Microsoft, announcing in May antivirus and antispam support for devices running the Windows Mobile 5.0 platform. Last December, MSN Hotmail opted for Trend Micro to shield its estimated 200 million users.

However, with the Redmond giant's impending entry into the business security space, the dynamics of partnership between the two may change, according to industry observers.
