From a US$100,000 startup founded in the living room to being a major supplier of processors, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has come a long way.

The world's second largest chipmaker strengthened its foothold against archrival Intel in the processor market when it finally won over the chip giant's most loyal supporter Dell Computer.

In recent years, AMD has been picking away at Intel's server market share due to the performance advantage offered by its Opteron processor. In July this year, AMD said it held 21.6 percent share of the overall x86 processor market, which includes servers and desktops.

The chipmaker is also eyeing to grab a bigger share of the China and other emerging markets.

Additionally, AMD is involved in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's US$100 laptop initiative, where its processors are being used.

This company is listed in Systems.
