German enterprise software giant SAP is still maintaining its lead in the business applications space.

The software company has earmarked 2010 as the year for the next major upgrade for its core product, and continues to target the small and medium-sized businesses.

SAP is also singing the service-oriented architecture (SOA) song with its NetWeaver product. The software vendor said during a conference in September that it plans to use SOA like "a gearbox". Businesses will be able to choose the package that they want.

Showing off its interest in delivering applications on tap, SAP debuted its hosted customer relationship management software service in February this year. The company said the plan was to offer a hybrid model to large and midsize businesses.

This company is listed in Software Infrastructure, Business Applications.
