Apple

When will Apple take the crown of the smartphone market? It may be sooner than you think.

The computer manufacturer-turned-smartphone maker overtook Research In Motion to take the No. 2 spot among smartphone vendors worldwide, according to a recent Canalys report. Some 6.9 million units of Apple's iPhone 3G were shipped during the third calendar quarter of 2008, translating to 17.3 percent of the market.

While the original iPhone was not welcome in corporations, the second-generation iPhone is turning heads. Businesses are warming up to Apple's iPhone, and companies such as Genentech and Disney have pledged their allegience to deploy iPhone inside their organizations.

The iPhone follows a string of successful products--including the candy-colored iMacs, the cool white iPod and digital music store iTunes--that helped to turn the fortunes of Apple under the leadership of CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple ranks among ZDNet Asia's Top 10 fastest-growing companies for 2008/2009.

This company is listed in Systems, Software infrastructure, Networking & Communications.
