EMC


EMC is an information management company with offerings that go beyond hardware storage to include software and consulting services.

Founded in 1979, the storage stalwart is based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, the United States. EMC has presence in more than 60 countries and employs approximately 38,000 people globally, of which about 40 percent are based outside the United States.

In April, EMC announced plans to acquire consumer storage devices maker Iomega for US$213 million, a move that would be vital to the company's strategy to tap the consumer and small business market.

At the same time, EMC unveiled plans to boost its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The storage vendor is eyeing the small office/ home office (Soho) and consumer market segments, particularly in Asia, and has established dedicated businesses units across it offices in the region.

It completed its acquisition of server software maker VMware, in January 2004, for a final purchase price of US$625 million in cash.
