Motorola

In a bid to revive its struggling mobile-phone unit, Motorola is focusing on Android handsets and is reportedly prepping a social-networking smartphone based on Google's mobile operating system for release by June 2009.

Earlier this year, the U.S.-based company announced plans to separate its money-losing mobile devices division from the rest of the company, but said recently that the spilt will be delayed.

Although the world's No. 3 handset maker surprised Wall Street with a small profit and steady market share for the second quarter of 2008, Motorola was once again in the red when its revenue for the third quarter took a dive by some 15 percent to US$7.48 billion, and posted a net loss of US$397 million.

Headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, Motorola was founded in 1928 and employs some 66,000 workers globally. It is placed 200th in the 2008 Fortune Global 500 list.

This company is listed in Systems, Networking & Communications.
