SINGAPORE--Tourists coming to this region can do away with your ordinary, bricks and mortar tour guide, as long as they have a handheld computing device.

This is the result of a tie-up between Belgian company Lernout & Hauspice, which publishes speech and language software, and local company Worldmine, which runs a travel Website.

Audio tours and maps can be downloaded on a handheld, so tourists an opt out of the crowded tour buses in favour of wandering on their own, and still learn something about the place they visit.

Worldmine is using the Belgian company's software to translate tours from English to French, Chinese and Japanese, which it will convert into speech reported The Straits Times.

It is planning audio tours for Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, and expects to roll out tours for 50 other destinations by year-end.

Your Palm may lack the human touch, but at least electronic guides don't need to be tipped.

The reaction to a report issued Tuesday by Flurry Analytics managed to completely overlook some interesting news--the Android-based Motorola Droid outsold the original iPhone over the same period of time following their respective launches--to focus instead on the sales numbers for the Nexus One.
