The Data Center of the Future: Adapting to 21st Century Customer-Driven Demands

With virtualization technologies becoming mainstream and adoption rates rising, traditional data centers have transformed into virtual data centers, where technologies are virtualized to provide business services. Although this trend will continue for a few more years, leading-edge companies are positioning themselves for the data center of the future. The data center of the future no longer focuses on technology only, but instead it concentrates on the services that need to be provided to the clients. In effect, the data center transforms into a services data center. The author describes the transformation from traditional, via virtual, to the services data center, with special emphasis on the business impact of this transformation.

JustRunIt: Experiment-Based Management of Virtualized Data Centers

Managing data centers is a challenging endeavor. State-of-the-art management systems often rely on analytical modeling to assess the performance, availability, and/or energy implications of potential management decisions or system configurations. This paper argues that actual experiments are cheaper, simpler, and more accurate than models for many management tasks. To support this claim, an infrastructure is built for experiment based management of virtualized data centers, called JustRunIt. The infrastructure creates a sandboxed environment in which experiments can be run-on a very small number of machines - using real workloads and real system state, but without affecting the on-line system.

BrownMap: Enforcing Power Budget in Shared Data Centers

Shared data centers that use virtualized servers as building blocks (e.g., clouds) are emerging as an exciting technology that provides a computational platform for customers without incurring a steep setup cost. The providers of a shared data center, however, need intelligent mechanisms to deal with bursts in resource requirements as well as failures that may significantly reduce resource availability. In this work, the author investigates mechanisms to ensure that a shared data center can operate within a power budget, while maximizing the overall revenue earned by the provider. The paper presents the BrownMap methodology that is able to ensure that data centers can deal both with outages that reduces the available power or with surges in workload.
