ZDNet is available in the following editions:
The unprecedented pace at which new technology is being introduced into the marketplace is driving an explosion of new ways to compute, communicate and share knowledge. Increases in network reliability and the reduced cost of bandwidth, along with innovations in hardware and new approaches to application management have spawned promising new approaches to personal computing. One such area is "Centralized" computing, often termed "thin client computing". HP collectively refers to these approaches as "Remote Client Solutions". Regardless of the term used, the strategy is to deploy thin client user devices running a lightweight operating system with little or no resident applications. With no hard drive and no moving parts, thin clients are designed to provide 7-10 years of service.

Sappi Limited is a leading producer of coated fine paper which is widely used in books, brochures, magazines and other printed products. When paper manufacturer Sappi acquired part of rival M-real's business, it had just three months to transition the IT environment for 1,300 workers. Sappi implemented 1,250 HP Thin Clients in four mills and 12 sales offices across Europe. They are served by redundant Citrix XenAPP environments at two data centres.
49 days ago by Hewlett-Packard (HP) DownloadFlorida Gulf Coast University is a fairly new school, founded in the late 1990s to serve southwest Florida, one of the state's fastest growing areas. Florida Gulf Coast University wanted to replace trouble-prone Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) workstations in the university library. Florida Gulf Coast University chose HP Compaq t5730 Thin Clients, which are solid-state devices that run on less power than traditional workstations and produce less heat.

That was the imperative that led CIO Jorge Mata of Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) to migrate from a distributed desktop PC architecture to an HP Client Virtualization Solution with HP thin clients and blade PCs. LACCD wanted to fulfill educational mission while cutting costs. LACCD deployed HP Client Virtualization Solution with HP thin clients and HP blade PCs.

Florida's Intercoastal Medical Group (IMG) counts 255,000 patient encounters a year, 85,000 lab tests and 80,000 imaging studies. IMG wanted to improve patient care and reduce paper-based error potential with electronic health records and practice management system. Florida's Intercoastal Medical Group (IMG) deployed HP thin client platform.

40 days ago by Hewlett-Packard (HP) DownloadAs storage and network administrators continue to deploy more IO intensive tier-1 applications, powerful servers to support these applications, and virtualized environments to consolidate resources, the ability to deliver true end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) becomes increasingly important within an enterprise-class data center to meet the committed Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The purpose of this document is to explain the technical and business benefits of deploying QoS across a Fibre Channel (FC) network infrastructure for both non-virtualized and virtualized environments. HP B-series FC Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) combined with a new FOS license called Server Application Optimization (SAO) extends hardware enforced QoS capabilities from the fabric to the server infrastructure, optimizing application performance.
49 days ago by Hewlett-Packard (HP) DownloadI/O StreamGuard is an innovative feature that protects critical streaming applications such as tape backup and video from being interrupted when events such as server reboots occur elsewhere in the Fibre Channel SAN fabric. Included with every HP StorageWorks SN6000 Stackable 8Gb Fibre Channel Switch and HP StorageWorks 8/20q Fibre Channel Switch, I/O StreamGuard is accessed through an easy-to-use graphical interface and may be applied automatically to all host-attached ports or selectively on a per-port basis - eliminating the need for complex zoning configurations to maintain network stability.
49 days ago by Hewlett-Packard (HP) DownloadUsing the HP StorageWorks XP Disk Array in an environment where data services are provided to both mainframe and open system hosts can result in a need for data consistency of remote copied data that spans mainframe and open system hosts. The Open/MF (Open/Mainframe) Consistency Preservation Function provides this capability.
49 days ago by Hewlett-Packard (HP) DownloadWhen Delta Air Lines first began using rudimentary SOA software tools it quickly realized benefits, including a 25% re-use rate for services. Delta moved to web services; this triggered a decision to migrate to a more sophisticated approach to SOA as well. The airline selected TIBCO ActiveMatrix as its SOA platform, and HP SOA Systinet for its SOA governance and registry solution. Although Delta Air Lines was confident in the capabilities of the software it purchased, it also recognized that it needed more than software. So Delta decided to bring HP professional consulting on-site to set up a SOA Center of Excellence.
