GSM Network Designs usually offers big challenges for achieving an efficient cost while respecting the complex combinatorial technical constraints. This networks have hundreds or thousands BTS (Base Transceiver Station). They have their traffic grouped in hubs, then in BSC (Base Station Controller) nodes to reach the MSC. Hubs must be elected within the BTS set and BSC nodes have to be geographically allocated in the available sites. Also, the number and model of these BSC impact in the overall cost while the distances affect the transmission costs. This paper presents a mathematical model for designing a GSM network from the BTS lower layer until the MSC layer.

The key goals for this evolution are increased data rate, improved spectrum efficiency, improved coverage and reduced latency. The end results of these goals are significantly improving service provisioning and reduction of operator costs for different traffic scenarios. The requirements for LTE-Advanced are agreed and the radio interface techniques are currently under discussion.

The network planning has been carried out using digital clutter, terrain and vector data as input to ASSET3G whose default parameters have been fine tuned using measurement data of plane and rolling hill terrains. The ASSET3G parameters have been tuned to achieve the closest matching plot between the measured and ASSET3G generated values of path loss at 320 MHz. It is shown that the upper bound of mean error, standard deviation and path loss exponents for plane and hilly terrains are 5, 6 & 2.40 and 9, 11 and 3.13 respectively, which is below their respective acceptable limits.

Based on a recent survey (Nov. 2006), the GSM Association's Smart Card Group predicted that 128K SIM cards would overtake 64K before the end of 2006, and that the increase in SIM memory size would continue accelerating in coming years. As of the start of 2007, own figures confirm this prediction. New business opportunities and better service offerings have led mobile operators to deploy SIMs with memories from just 8K to megabytes.
