Going Green With HP-UX 11i v3: Power Management Techniques to Reduce Costs and Environmental Impacts

HP-UX 11i v3 provides new capabilities to reduce the amount of power used by idle or partially idle servers. This paper describes some of the ways one can make use of HP-UX to save power and cooling expense while reducing datacenter's environmental footprint. Using the processor-based power savings features is a low overhead, low maintenance way to reduce power requirements. These features are designed to be easy to deploy too many systems and will not usually require further monitoring to adapt to changing workload demands on servers.

Transitioning SAP Environments From HP 9000 Servers Running HP-UX 11i to HP Integrity Servers Running HP-UX 11i

To take advantage of the higher processing power and new architecture of the Intel Itanium processor, application binaries are recompiled for HP-UX on HP Integrity servers. HP-UX source code compatibility between PA-RISC and Itanium has enabled a simple and safe transition procedure. SAP applications and the backend database, are clearly mission-performance critical. Both have therefore been re-compiled to take advantage of Itanium's Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) technology developed by HP. Binary compatibility between HP-UX on PA-RISC and HP-UX on Itanium servers is unique to HP and gives the customer peace of mind that the transition to Integrity will be smooth. Based on this binary compatibility, data files used on the PA-RISC system can also be used on the Itanium-based Integrity machine.

IBM WebSphere MQ V7 Performance Report on HP-UX 11i V3 and HP Integrity Servers

IBM WebSphere MQ V7.0 on HP-UX has similar performance characteristics to WebSphere MQ V6. This paper shows the throughput for Local, Client and Distributed Queuing using 2 kilobyte message sizes with non-persistent non-trusted (NP_NT), non-persistent trusted (NP) and persistent message (PM) types. Larger message sizes of 20K, 200K and 2M sizes are also provided. A single cell (4p/8c) of an HP Integrity Superdome SD64B server, running HP-UX 11i v3 operating system, was used for the WebSphere MQ server system under test. The results from 4 and 8 cores, tuned and un-tuned system configurations were measured and analyzed.
