The United States has been a world leader in information technology development and deployment, including the Internet. To maintain that leadership position the U.S. must compete effectively with other countries to attract businesses that rely on broadband infrastructure. Robust broadband infrastructure, including significant amounts of wireless based broadband access, provides the foundation for such effective competition.

Roaming and the Shared Wireless Broadband Network

Roaming capabilities are essential to providing users of the NBDS with seamless or near seamless nationwide services. Delivering those capabilities requires functionality in the network to support authentication. It may also require legal and financial arrangements between network operators and between operators and a clearinghouse provider. As with many other issues related to the NBDS, the specific arrangements depend on both technical and governance considerations, including roles played by the PSBL, local builders, and D Block licensees/private commercial partners in building, owning, and operating the network.

Franklin County, VA Attracts Economic Development With High-Speed Wireless Broadband

With a large land area, dispersed population, and limited funds, Franklin County, VA looked for a way to cost effectively meet the broadband demands of its residents, as well as reduces county operational costs. Franklin County worked with local landowners, partnered with B2X and leveraged grant funding to expand broadband services throughout the 721 square mile area for a total county investment of $83,000 from the general fund and a $50,000 federal grant (less than 24% of the projected cost). Maximizing the Value of Next-Generation Video Security Networks

One of the biggest challenges faced by public safety organizations today is the sheer volume of devices they carry around both on their bodies and in their cars. For example, in their vehicles, first responders often have a trunk filled with all sorts of electronics, and this causes problems in terms of space, heat dissipation and power. In addition, the limited availability of high-bandwidth wireless transport networks today require these in-vehicle systems to perform much of the high-intensive video processing for applications such as dash-cams and Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) systems locally in the vehicle.
