In the past year, Forrester interviewed 27 Sybase customers who are using Sybase Replication Server to investigate their implementations. Most customers found that Sybase met or exceeded their data movement requirements by offering a reliable, high-performance, flexible solution to support their mission-critical applications. Today, thousands of enterprises rely on Sybase replication technology to support high availability, disaster recovery, data integration, reporting, data distribution, and database migration requirements for Sybase and non-Sybase databases. Furthermore, the latest version, Sybase Replication Server 15.2, delivers improved performance, ease of use, and extended support for heterogeneous databases. Application designers and information management professionals should consider Sybase's replication technology a good alternative to the replication technology native to non- Sybase databases or to other leading database-independent enterprise data movement solutions such as GoldenGate Software Transactional Data Management (TDM), IBM InfoSphere Replication, and Quest Software SharePlex.

High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) have bread interpretation within the industry. Some consider them in the literal sense where they mean a plan and supporting technologies that address a partial or complete site loss due to a disaster caused by fire or power outage, or natural causes like flood, hurricane, or earthquake. Others consider HA & DR to include protecting from server or application outages, down to even the simplest loss of data from accidental deletion or change or malicious attack like virus or other malware.
To accommodate the widest range of customer scenarios, this tool was created to encompass the broadest interpretation of high availability and disaster recovery.
The global recession, increased competition requiring just-in-time processes, squeezed information technology (IT) budgets, explosive data growth, and new regulatory requirements have all increased the importance of disaster recovery (DR). As a result, organizations are now under pressure to create, re-evaluate and update their disaster recovery plans.
Looking across the DR industry today, there are hundreds of solutions whose value should be measured in three ways: cost, performance and risk.
In most enterprises today, personal data such as last name, social security number, date of birth and so on seems to proliferate across multitude of databases. It is the responsibility of the custodian of that data to protect the "Personally Identifiable Information (PII)" for reasons varying from compliance to privacy protection. Various techniques are now prevalent to protect the personal information. Data de-identification is one such most commonly employed technique. This paper aims to share insights that help Data Custodians in an enterprise, Security Auditor, Risk and Compliance Group, Data Security Subject Matter Expert and the curious minds of the database world.

67 days ago by CDW DownloadThe economic downturn may be loosening its grip on Asia/Pacific economies. But with recovery comes fierce competition, as companies around the world rush to emerging markets to supplement delayed prospects for growth in developed markets. As competition heats up, companies that are able to make good decisions quickly and bring them to action are likely to have an edge on their peers. Our recent study among senior finance and IT executives in Asia/Pacific suggests that companies have been taking steps to ensure that they not only have access to the right information, but also have good decision-making processes in place in preparation for the emerging recovery.

6 days ago by Sybase DownloadReplication Server moves and synchronizes data across the enterprise to meet a host of competing challenges in the enterprise, such as heterogeneous data replication and synchronization, real-time reporting, and disaster recovery and high availability. This allows businesses to comply with increasingly rigid industry regulations, remove risk from their distributed enterprise environments, and leverage existing investments of acquired assets. This brochure is an overview of why more than 2600 worldwide enterprise customers are using Replication Server.
21 days ago by Sybase DownloadWe are pleased to have Merv Adrian, IT Market Strategy Analyst, join us in this Sybase sponsored webcast to explore the critical issue of data integration environments in the enterprise - many of which are fragmented and poorly managed.
Mr. Adrian will address how heterogeneity is the new standard in today's data center, where multiple DBMSs, multiple versions of the same DBMS, and applications running on different DBMSs exist side by side. As organizations begin to realize the need to keep data synchronized and available in these multiple locations, replication technologies fill a critical need. Keeping data warehouses fresh, supporting product migrations and disaster recovery depends on an effective data replication strategy. Multiple, single source, point-to-point connections are not the answer - he will show you how to take a comprehensive view of unifying your data.

This paper contrasts row-oriented database systems with column-oriented database systems and elaborates on the benefits of the columnar approach. A review of how data access latency across the different levels of the memory hierarchy can affect application performance sheds some light on the benefits of the column-oriented approach and suggests a number of drivers for increasing analytical application performance, particularly by means of exploiting parallelism. Finally, the paper suggests some factors guiding the evaluation process when considering a columnar system.
