Using Co-Presence Communities to Enhance Social Recommendation

Publisher's description

This paper proposes a social recommendation algorithm for use in a research social network environment. The social recommendation algorithm proposed combines the concepts of a relationship ontology and item-based Collaborative Filtering (CF). While the network setup in social networking sites can accurately reflect the social landscape of its users, it is much harder to detect the importance or strength of any one link. The paper therefore proposes an extension to the recommendation algorithm which makes use of the idea of co-presence communities to increase the relevance of the recommendations. A co-presence community can be detected from with data collected from Bluetooth-enabled mobiles. Detection of a co-presence community can help determine the nature and importance of the social links between participating members.

Travel Giant Finds That Users Respond Faster, Better, to Windows Mobile Application

Travel industry giant Sabre Holdings needed a Windows Mobile version of its travel-tracking application, TripCase, to attract business partners and the broad base of enterprise customers with whom Windows phones are popular. The company needed a fast time-to-market to launch the product in time for the busiest travel time of the year, and it needed the product to be compelling. Microsoft technologies and a savvy solution provider, Clarius Consulting, helped bring the product to market in just two months. The Windows Mobile application features faster startup times, more streamlined navigation and contact integration, and a more comprehensive customer experience than the iPhone version. Customers have been faster to download and use the Windows Mobile application, and customer feedback on it has been more positive.

Decreasing Driver Distraction: What to Look for in Mobile Computing Technologies to Improve Safety

There is no lack of evidence to suggest that driver distraction is the leading cause of accidents. But when managing a fleet of drivers, minimizing in-vehicle distractions is challenging, especially considering the vehicle is essentially the driver's office. Decreasing Driver Distraction: What to Look for in Mobile Computing Technologies to Improve Safety When picking the right in-vehicle computer for the fleet, selecting one that minimizes driver interaction when the vehicle is in motion is as significant a consideration as choosing one that improves fleet efficiency.

IT Group Gains Mobile Solution Estimated to Save Up to 20 Percent in Operating Costs

Rainer Gold, a senior system engineer at Voith IT Solutions, and two IT colleagues pilot-tested Windows phones with Windows Mobile 6.5. Based on the successful pilot, Voith IT will begin deploying the mobile phones to 2,000 users worldwide. Gold expects to save money with easy-to-use phones that help them work faster, are up to 20 percent less expensive to operate, and work efficiently with the company's existing Microsoft software.

An Application Dependent Medium Access Protocol for Active RFID Using Dynamic Tuning of the Back-Off Algorithm

Active Radio Frequency Identification (A-RFID) is a technology where the tags (transponders) carry an on-board energy source for powering the radio, processor circuits, and sensors. Besides offering longer working distance between RFID-reader and tag than passive RFID, this also enables the tags to do sensor measurements, calculations and storage even when no RFID-reader is in the vicinity of the tags. This paper introduces a medium access data communication protocol which dynamically adjusts its back-off algorithm to best suit the actual active RFID application at hand.

Statistical Decision Making for Authentication and Intrusion Detection

User authentication and intrusion detection differ from standard classification problems in that while one has data generated from legitimate users, impostor or intrusion data is scarce or non-existent. The paper reviews existing techniques for dealing with this problem and propose a novel alternative based on a principled statistical decision-making view point. The paper examines the technique on a toy problem and validates it on complex real-world data from an RFID based access control system. The results indicate that it can significantly outperform the classical world model approach. The method could be more generally useful in other decision-making scenarios where there is a lack of adversary data.

A Practical Look at Micro-Kernels and Virtual Machine Monitors

This paper looks at two different approaches used to provide embedded system support for virtualization and virtual machine monitors for consumer electronics and mobile devices. The paper compares the micro-kernel approach, which has been a popular choice for building embedded operating systems with the Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) or hypervisor approach widely deployed in general purpose computing environments such as desktops and data center servers. Comparison criteria are based on virtualization use cases that are typical of Consumer Electronics (CE) systems such as mobile devices and IPTV. These approaches are further evaluated based on performance and on their ability to allow re-use of existing (often real-time) software as well as modern open operating systems such as Linux while remaining as transparently as possible.

Remote Attestation for HDD Files Using Kernel Protection Mechanism

A remote attestation that measures files on a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is important for intrusion detection on a data center server. When the server is infected by a rootkit, the kernel may reply with a faked response. Moreover, when a file measurement application or its result are manipulated, the measurement response is not reliable. A trusted platform module (TPM) that achieves a chain of trust from BIOS to kernel upon booting is proposed to provide the remote attestation. However, as the data center server is rarely rebooted, the TPM is ill suited for the file measurement of the running server. This paper proposes an on-demand remote attestation scheme for HDD files of the server.

A Low-IF CMOS Simultaneous GPS Receiver Integrated in a Multimode Transceiver

Since the FCC mandates the E911 (Enhanced 911) services, carriers using GPS chips to help determine a user's location need to upgrade all handsets in use to GPS-capable models. Meanwhile, the navigation features become much desirable in the personal communication devices such as the cellular phones. This requires the GPS receiver works simultaneously with placing and receiving calls in the complex ElectroMagnetic (EM) environment such as airport and urban indoor environment. This put stringent requirements for GPS receiver sensitivity and its interoperability with other cellular systems.

A 0.35-µm CMOS Solar Energy Scavenger With Power Storage Management System

This paper presents an integrated solar energy scavenger realized in a 0.35 µm CMOS technology. The proposed system collects solar energy from the environment through integrated diodes, accumulates it and, delivers it to the load when it is enough to allow proper operation of the CMOS circuitry. The proposed system is suitable for discrete-time regime applications, such as sensor network nodes or, generally, systems that require power supply periodically for short time slots. In order to properly design the system, the author developed a model of the integrated solar cell on the basis of measurement data extracted from a test chip. The power management circuit, including a charge pumps a comparator and a linear voltage regulator, has been extensively simulated.
